Six months after I moved to Dayton in 1972, I bought my first horse whom I named "Whiskey". A few months later, I got an invitation from the Allran Ranch to assist them on a three-day cattle drive from Dayton to Horse Mountain. There were eight of us who had to drive over 600 head of cattle to their winter range near Horse Mountain. We left before dawn on the second day and the herd moved slowly through the cold morning desert. Suddenly, the sun rose over the horizon in a burning blaze of fire. The sunrise and cattle made such an impression on me that I did a color pencil sketch of it when I returned home. A few days later, I started painting it to preserve the memory.
