This scene takes place during a cattle round-up ride for the Callahan Ranch on a freezing cold morning in January, while crossing the Steamboat Hot Springs located at the bottom of Mount Rose near Reno. The ground here consists of a series of crevices that bubble up hot steam and water, created by the fires of hell and cooled in the bright light of a cold Nevada morning. It was so chilly that the steam froze four inches off the hot ground, creating an eerie scene. I hope you enjoy "Hell Freezes Over" as much as I enjoyed being there and painting this beautiful scene.
