This is a description of a scene from one of the annual Allran Ranch cattle drives. It was a cold morning in late October, and I was riding at the back of the group. We were moving the cattle along the phone lines during this part of the drive. As the sun started to rise and touch the phone lines, lighting them up, the cattle and drovers in front of me ran across an alkaline flat. A tremendous explosion of dust began drifting into the morning light, tumbling slowly back on itself, with a few stars still shining brightly in the sky.
