Six months after moving to Dayton in 1972, I bought my first horse, "Whiskey".
A few months later, the Allran Ranch invited me to help out on a 3-day cattle drive from Dayton to Horse Mountain.

Eight of us were driving over 600 head of cattle to winter range near Horse Mountain.
Leaving just before the break of dawn on the 2nd day out, the herd moved slowly through the cold morning desert.

Then the sun slowly exploded over the horizon, as if were a burning blaze of fire.

Returning home, I did a color pencil sketch of the sunrise and cattle.  I began painting it a few days later while it was fresh in my mind.
