This scene crossing the Steam Boat Hot Springs, took place on a ride, rounding up cattle for the Callahan Ranch one freezing cold morning in January.
The Steamboat Hot Springs lies at the bottom of Mount Rose near Reno. The ground here is a series of crevices that bubble up hot steam and water. Cooked by the fires of hell and cooled in the bright light of a cold Nevada morning.
It was so cold, that four inches off the hot ground, the steam froze and created this erie scene.
I hope you enjoy "Hell Freezes Over" as much as I enjoyed being there and painting this scene.
