Every year, I used to attend the California rodeo in Salinas as an exhibiting artist and to search for unique western scenes that I could paint. One day, while taking a break from working at the art show, I heard a great roar coming from the crowd. Curious, I walked towards the sound and was met with a wonderful sight. A young girl named Mette Ellerman was standing proudly on the back of her mare, galloping around the perimeter of the arena. She held the American flag tightly in her hands, which was snapping and cracking under the rushing wind. The force of the flag seemed like it would drag Mette off her horse, but she smiled and prevailed to the delight of the entire audience.
