Every year I attended the California rodeo in Salinas, as an exhibiting artist and in search of unique western scenes that I might paint.
Taking a break from working the art show, I was walked out to the arena as a great roar rose from the crowd. Running towards the sound I was met with a wonderful sight.
A young girl, Mette Ellerman, was standing proudly on the back of her mare, galloped around the perimeter of the arena.
Held tightly in her hands, the American Flag, snapping and cracking under the rushing wind. The force of the flag seemed it would drag Mette off her horse, but she smiled and prevailed to the delight of the entire audience.
